Intermittent Fasting: Transformational Technique | Cynthia Thurlow | TEDxGreenville

NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice and consult a medical professional before adopting an intermittent fasting regiment. This talk only represents the speaker’s views on fasting, diet, and health. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf

Two-thirds of women 40-59 years old are overweight and more than 1/2 are obese. Intermittent fasting can help women lose weight effectively. And can have profound impact on bio-physical profiles, but also improved self esteem and interpersonal relationships. It is easy to implement, it is inexpensive and flexible.

Cynthia is a Western medicine trained nurse practitioner and functional nutritionist who is passionate about female hormonal health. She believes that the inherent power of food and nutrition can be your greatest asset to your health and wellness journey. She works 1:1 with female clients and is the creator of Wholistic Blueprint a 6-week signature program for female hormonal health, she's also the co-host of Everyday Wellness podcast and a recurring segment contributor on her local ABC affiliate in Washington, DC. Rare, in today's age, that someone 1: actually shares the details without just hinting they are in a book you have to buy, and 2: isn't selling powders, pills, or shakes.

I used to weigh over 400 pounds. In a little over a year I have been able to to lose over 100 pounds over the last year. I did this by intermittent fasting and switched to a WFPB (Whole Foods Plant-Based) lifestyle. No exercise, no counting calories. I am disabled so I couldn't exercise. But now with the weight loss, I can exercise. Exercise is a necessary key component for me now. I got down below 300 pounds and suddenly my weight loss stalled. So now I do DDP YOGA and use a stationary exercise bike. The adventure continues.

Ilshim 34
Ilshim 34:
My intermittent fasting consists of eating between 12pm and 4pm and fasting the rest of time. I have been doing this for over eight months and I feel as good as I can be at my age (I will be 77 in a few days!) I am extremely poor, so I can't afford the best quality salmon, and most of my vegetables, avocados, and nuts are not organic, but I eat as healthy as my budget allows. Sometimes what you don't eat is just as important as what you eat. Avoid processed and sugary foods, avoid restaurants (I can't afford them anyway!), make everything from scratch, chew your food well, etc. Hope it helps!

Nothing, absolutely nothing, has worked so well for me! I highly recommend it, I went from a size 14/16 to a size 8/10, my brain was functioning so amazingly and I was happy everyday day. I paired it up with daily yoga, breathing exercises, meditation, healthy eating (avocados, sourdough bread, smoothies and loads of nuts...). I do have to say, it is a lot easier to pick up this habit if you live on your own, if you have people at home with you that aren't taking this on it's gonna be a bit of a challenge, so good luck! I'm gonna start doing it again.

I stumbled upon IF. After retiring I've been sleeping in till late morning and have breakfast around 11 or 12. Usually coffee and toast with peanut butter. I then eat a normal dinner at a normal time and then I am full and done for the day. I started losing weight (I was pretty overweight) and worried i had cancer or something because I kept losing weight. One day while watching a daytime TV show with a guest nutritionist who was touting IF, I realized that's what I was doing. I had lost 34 pounds and it wasn't cancer! I have been able to keep the weight off during this time of quarantine while everyone else is gaining. It is the easiest "diet" I have ever done. It's not really a diet.
Paul Gallimore
Paul Gallimore:
What she is saying is quite correct. Sugar is a major issue, though, the big food corporations put it in ABSOLUTELY everything; it's the real cause of the obesity epidemic. The solution is to reduce what you eat from packets, cans, bottles and sachets. Get that and the fasting right, and weight will drop off you - like it did for me.

Great video. I’m 57 and was wondering How many times a week should practice intermittent fasting. And if practicing 16/8 wouldn’t that be defeating the purpose of intermittent fasting if one has 2 eat for 8 hours in the order 2 get all their macros in or do one fast for 16 hrs eat and fast again for 8.

I've been doing Intermittent Fasting since January 6th. I've lost 25 lbs so far and I know I can lose more if I watch what I'm eating (I'm not paying too much attention to what I eat, only to the times I'm fasting/eating). It works. I mostly do 20:4 (20 hrs fasting, 4 hrs eating). It's the first time I'm able to lose weight in 2+ years and after trying different things (other diets, trainers at the gym, etc).

I used to be an all-day grazer. From 7 or 8 am to 11pm at night. Now, I’ve been fasting 16-19 hours and eating within a 5-8 hour window (mostly 16:8) for 8 months and have dropped more than 30 lbs without counting a calorie or macro. I’m so glad I learned about intermittent fasting!

This changed my life. I fasted for 16 hours every day and timed it for a week. My energy levels are amazing, my body composition became better, my digestion improved, i save money and food since i only cook when i eat once or twice per day... I am so impressed.
Carol Shannon
Carol Shannon:
I’ve been intermittent fasting for about 2 years now and I absolutely love it. I , however, do not skip breakfast because from my research I feel it’s not in my best interest. My hours of food consumption begin at about 9 am and I’m finished eating by 2 pm. So I have a 19 hour window where I’m not eating and I love it! The first week was hard but after that, it was easy. Lots of time for the body to do its spring cleaning :) I also walk 2 1/2 miles a day. I don’t eat meat and rarely dairy but I do eat fish. Lots of greens, nuts, some fruit. I rotate what I eat all the time. So much easier, less dishes, less food prep, more time for fun! Grazing all day long is the worst thing you can do for your body as digestion requires more energy than literally ANY OTHER ACTIVITY!

Guys, she said free, simple and flexible yet all the comments about what is the best time to eat and fast. Set your own schedule. Period. Also tea and coffee and water is okay as long as you don't add sugar or cream. Most doctors advocating IF say that keep a drink under 50 calories and you will not break your fast. Pretty sure I will get a ton of comments about this last line!! Keep it S.I.M.P.L.E. but start NOW.

As a kid in the 70's we had 2 meals a day, lunch and dinner. I didn't eat breakfast and nor did I miss it. Never wanted to eat in the morning as a kid anyway. In the evening mom had to make me come in and eat dinner. There were no snacks in the pantry with the exception of popcorn you had to make on the stove.

She is ABSOLUTELY right! I lost 60lbs skipping "the most important meal of the day." I tried the 16:8. The first 30lbs was lost with no exercise or diet change, the last 30lbs were lost with diet change and exercise. It was hands down one of the best changes I have ever made in my life.
